The Five Chinese Brothers / By
Claire Huchet Bishop
Published in 1938 by
Coward-McCann
Summary
The five Chinese Brothers are identical
brothers who live with their mother in a little house
by the sea. They all have
special talents, the first brother could swallow the sea, the second brother
had an iron neck, the third brother could stretch his legs very far, the forth
brother could not be burned, and the firth Chinese brother could hold his breath
indefinitely.
The first brother would go fishing every morning, and one day a
little boy asked to go with him, the first Chinese brother said yes under one
condition, “You shall obey me promptly.” The boy agreed and went with the first
brother to go fishing , the first brother swallowed the sea and the boy went to
collect treasures, when the brother could not hold the sea any more he told the
boy to come back but he did not listen, he
beckoned and beckoned but the boy would not come back. Then the sea burst out
of his mouth and back into the sea bed, and the first brother was forced to
return without the boy, he was arrested and sent to prison.
Then he was sentenced to be
drowned, he then asked to go home and say goodbye to his mother, the judge
agreed, “It is only fair” so the second brother went home and the third brother
took his place, and when they threw him in the sea he stretched his legs and
stood tall in the sea. Astonished and angry the people decided it was time to
burn him.
So the brother asked the judge to go say goodbye to his mother, after
being allowed he went home, and the forth brother took his place, however he
could not be burned, therefor when the people made a large fire to burn him he was
warm and content, after getting even more angry they decided to suffocate him.
The forth Chinese brother asked the judge, “Your Honor, will you allow me to go
and bid my mother good-bye?” The judge replied, “It is only fair.” So the forth
brother went home and the fifth brother took his place, and when they tried to
suffocate him he held his breath until they brought him out. They were all annoyed
and astonished so they finally decide because he could not be killed they would
let him go and drop all charges made against him. “And the Five Chinese
Brothers and their mother all lived together happily for many years.”
Analysis
This book seems to be promoting ethnic stereotypes about the
Chinese, as well as promoting lying, and not taking consequence for actions. I
see very little good in this book, there is the death of a child and also
discusses capital punishment, four attempts at execution. I did not see any educational
views on this book, or cultural accuracy. The Chinese brothers were portrayed as
having special abilities, and cheating to get out of their punishment. I would
not want this book in my classroom, although it was entertaining and an easy read,
it was not realistic and could potentially teach children it is okay to cheat.
In evaluating children’s literature #4, the illustrations
are authentic and non-stereotyped. I think the characters all looked the
same, they appeared stereotyped, with slanted eyes and pointed Chinese hats.
I think the judge held the power and the town’s
people, there was no trial and no sign of question, the judge decided the first
Chinese brother was a murderer and should be punished for it.
·
What are the
consequences of certain behaviors? What behaviors or traits are rewarded, and
how? What behaviors are punished, and how?
The Chinese
brothers were punished very harshly, they were sentenced to die in front of the
whole town, and as the brothers would not die and the towns people got angry
they made the demanded a harder punishment, when nothing was working they let
him go.
·
Whose
voices are heard? Whose are missing?
I felt like the brother never got a say in the very
beginning, however I know it is a children’s book, and I am sure there are many
details not mentioned in the story.
From 10 quick ways to analyze children’s books,
#6, I felt like the child in the story was portrayed as disobedient, he did
not keep to his word when he said he would come when the brother called him.
Reading the reviews of this book, I found that it
was a childhood favorite for many people, as it was mine, I loved this story. I
grew up listening to my grandpa read it to us. It was not until I re-opened the
book and saw just how much was wrong with it. The book has been re written
multiple times with complaints about all the Chinese men looking the same and wearing
typical clothing. However, that created many complaints as well, with sayings
like, “People should be racially sensitive but not paranoid. In this
era of cultural diversity, we should be able to see the humor. The caricatures
are innocent not disrespectful.” (Amazon reviews http://www.amazon.com/The-Five-Chinese-Brothers-Paperstar/dp/0698113578
) Which I thought was very interesting.

After reading your blog I am left wondering what age group this book is aimed at? It seems like something for older children because of the content about death and violence that is addressed poorly for such a young age group. I did not know that there were books like this, and I wonder if this is based off a folklore type of story?
ReplyDeleteYikes! It is very interesting seeing how different each one of these books that we all read are. After reading your blog, I am not so sure that I would want to go out of my way to read this book. Nor would I want to show it to younger children. It seems as if this book was aimed at an older group of children considering everything that it describes. I agree with Erica, perhaps this story was based off of a folktale...
ReplyDeleteWow! From what I read on your post this book is not a book for younger children. I do not recall reading what age group this book is geared towards. However, I feel that this books is not a book for the younger generation because of all the violence.
ReplyDeleteOh my. Interesting read. I never heard of this book but definitely not good for children. I liked how the judge was letting them go back home each time not very smart on his part. Makes you think have the brothers played this trick before? Thanks Bambi
ReplyDeleteWhen I first saw the book cover on your blog it looks like an interesting book and makes me want to read it. But after reading the rest of your blog post I would never use this for children I don't think that I would even use it for older children. Great blog post!
ReplyDeleteI have heard of this book but have never read it. Reading your analysis now it is very evident that this book promotes the offensive stereotype that all Asian/Chinese people look exactly the same. I was very shocked at the violence and dishonesty that was very clearly promoted in this story. I would definitely not promote this to children. I agree with the comments above I'm not sure who the book was geared for because it is inappropriate for younger kids and older kids.
ReplyDeleteI remember reading this book as a child. I don't remember the death and violence, I recall the cleverness of the brothers. I read this in elementary school but I don't recall the grade I was in. Reading your post brought back the memories of the book but now I can clearly see it is inappropriate for young children. Even if this is an old folktale what is the lesson you are supposed to take away from it I wonder? Was it all about the little boy not listening in the first place and all that followed was his fault? Or that if your smarter than the masses you can get away with anything?
ReplyDeleteAt any rate thank you for your review I enjoyed reading it.
I did a book by the same illustrator "The Story About Ping" and I also thought the images were inappropriate and stereo typical, perhaps that is just his style but I found it to be offensive nor are they books I would personally have in a classroom. I like that you mentioned there is not a whole lot of positive messages in this book, makes it hard to look past the stereotyping when there isn't even a lesson to be taken from it.
ReplyDeleteHi Kayla,
ReplyDeleteInteresting book. I noticed that it was published in 1938. At this time, Chinese stereotypes were rampant in American Society. I agree that this book has NO value in the library of a pre-schooler. I had a hard time reading it as an adult. The deception, lying, lack of consequences and genral negative tone of the story would not benefit anyone. I didnt feel this book was directed at children but more written to scare children into believing the stereotypes of the Chinese.
i also agree with your analysis of the book promoting lying and not having any consequences for their actions. i think that it would be a very confusing book to read to children because they might interpret that it is ok to lie and be sneaky. i think especially these days that it is important to enforce good ethics and morals into our children and having a consequence for an action they choose is important, they need to understand that you cant do something bad and get away with it. If you dont teach them that at a young age, they will be completely shocked when they are older getting in trouble by someone that is not their parent!
ReplyDeleteI learned that not all books are appropriate for children. I am glad you added analysis about the disobedience of the boys, that was very insightful. This book is definitely for the more mature at least 10 years + if at all. Very nice analysis by the way!
ReplyDeleteNever judge a book by it's cover! When I first saw the illustrations of the book, it looked happy and interesting! Your analysis completely changed that for me. I would not want my children or students to have this in their library. This book was published in 1938, a time period when there was a lot of racism towards immigrants, specifically the Chinese. This book seems extremely racist, based on their stereotypes on the Chinese. I wouldn't want any child to read a book that promotes lying, irresponsibility, capital punishment and death. It seems to extreme for young children to understand.
ReplyDeleteI really liked this book but not for how you reviewed it. They sentenced a man to death for killing a boy. He did not intentionally kill the boy. The boy did not listen and thats why the boy died. I think this book shows the power of family and how they worked together to save one another. I agree lying is not good but working together to save a member of the family is a good thing. I think using Chines people as the group of people show a stereotypical depiction of their culture but I really liked this store and the illustrations. I didnt like that they were trying to kill the brothers and for that I do not think children should read this book it seems very grown up to me. All in all a nice review and book choice.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. I cannot believe this book is a children's book! The book was fairly entertaining, amusing, and funny but I don't know if I had kids, if I would let them read this. Maybe if my future children were older children but not younger. I loved how you wrote out the story and added pictures to your analysis. Your analysis was very entertaining to read. I loved that I could read the story also and get an exact idea and know what you are referring to. I loved the text style you chose, your spacing. I agree with you that this book absolutely had no educational purposes and could possibly teach children that it is okay to cheat when it isn't. I am still unsure on why the first brother was arrested because he returned without the boy. Did the boy die or something?
